Kirkstone Pass

  Kirkstone Pass is, from what we could gather, the most scenic route into the Lake District.  As described by William Wordsworth:

Most potent when mists veil the sky,
Mists that distort and magnify;
While the coarse rushes, to the sweeping breeze,
Sigh forth their ancient melodies!

William Wordsworth (Kirkstone Pass)

  It is the A592 between Ullswater and Windermere/Ambleside.  We took it on our way from Edinburgh, south west to Windermere.  We essentially took it because it seemed like a better idea than taking the larger motorways, but it turned out to be the best drive of the trip.  It is named after a stone that looks like a kirk (church) but as we were driving through, we didn't know to look for it!  There is also an inn located near the apex which is supposedly haunted.

  Along the way, we also found Aira Force Falls which sounds all too much like Airforce Falls.  We stumbled across this by accident too.  It also is about the most famous water fall in the Lake District.  It was very promising with a small restaurant near the car park, but unfortunately the power was out and the restaurant was closed.  We could have used an afternoon tea!
