Pantheon

We stumbled across the Panthon by accident on our first day in Paris.  We had no idea what it was which made the discovery that much more interesting - and it took us a while to figure out what it was all about!  The interior is a bit misleading.  You can tell that it was clearly a religious building at one time (A church dedicated to St. Genevieve), but currently seems more like an empty art gallery than anything else.  As we got further into it, and down into the crypt, we realized what it really was.  Among those buried there are Victor Hugo and Marie Curie.

Something I did not realize at the time was that a pendulum hung from the central dome was used by Foucault to help prove the rotation of the earth.  We saw the pendulum (although I included no pictures of it on this page), which was returned to the Panthon in 1995,  while there and no idea of its importance.

We found that the sun had come out (for the first time of the trip) while we were inside, and our outlook on Paris was changed a great deal!  After this, we ended up in the Luxembourg Gardens which was an excellent place to enjoy seeing the sun.
