One of the first things you notice in Amsterdam is the style of the fronts of the buildings. They mostly have these sort of bell shaped tops and they almost all have a bit sticking out with a hook on it. It turns out that these are used to set up pulleys to help move furniture in and out of the buildings. The interior staircases are too small to do it so everythign goes in and out the windows.
