The Tower of London If you've never been, the Tower of London is not really a tower, it's a castle. One of its earliest components is the White Tower near the center of the castle is probably where it got its name. Since, it's been, among other things, the seat of the British government, residence to monarchs and most notably the location of a number of high profile beheadings! The White Tower was started by William the Conqueror and finished by his sons by 1100AD. The tower was expanded many times over the centuries by adding buildings, two walls and many towers. If you visit the Tower of London, your primary goal should be to find one of the Beefeaters' (or Yeomen of the Guard) tours. The Yeomen are essentially the protectors of the castle, but in reality they are a mostly honorary guard. They are all retired military and live and work at the Tower. Giving tours is one of their duties. They do it with flare! Some of the things to see at the Tower include the Crown Jewels, the beheading memorial, the White Tower (including arms and armaments exhibit), the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula. There are many other smaller things to explore and also events that take place throughout the year. |
