Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square was designed and built in the mid 1800's to commemorate Admiral Nelson's victory at Trafalgar in 1805.  On the north side it is dominated by the National Gallery, and the square itself is dominated by Nelson's Column - a very tall column topped by a statue of Nelson.

Also in the square are large fountains and, of course, many pigeons.  On the south side is also the spot of the original "charing cross" for which the area is still named.  This spot is the official (or perhaps legendary) spot from where all distances from London are measured.

While we only visited the square while wandering around London on our first day, had we had more time, we would also have gone into the National Gallery.
